Hi All,
Back at the end of July 2017, we announced we had the responsibility for updating John Tillers Civil War Battles series. See the initial announcement here; WDS now responsible for JTS Civil War Battles
After a truckload of work and the launch of the new title, Campaign Petersburg, we’re happy to make available the first three upgrades to previously released Civil War Battles titles.
Following, you can find updates for Campaign Antietam;

3D Maps; Hand drawn 3D maps for Campaign Antietam
Campaign Chancellorsville;

3D Maps; Hand drawn 3D maps for Campaign Chancellorsville
And Campaign Peninsula;

3D Maps; Hand drawn 3D maps for Campaign Peninsula
In addition, Campaign Petersburg gets it’s first patch as well and is bought up to the same standard as the above three games;
Update; Download link for 3.01 Update for Campaign Petersburg
Please note; we have separated the new 3D maps from the patch due to size, so you need to download two files to get the complete package that is shown in the screen shots below. This is not the case for Petersburg, which came with the 3D painted maps included. The updates will work on either the HPS or JTS versions of the games. Any new purchases of the above Civil War Battles will have both the latest updates and 3D maps included.
For those that are wondering, here is what’s included in the updates;
- Implemented Settings > Alternative Unit Symbols.
- Introduced the new Variable, Asymmetric, Turn-Based Victory Points System. [Available, but not really used yet.]
- Standardized weapon and movement values. Soon to be rolled out across prior and future titles
- Auto Defensive Fire has been adjusted so that artillery is set at “Min.” This change will enhance play against the A/I, and will help conserve overall artillery ammunition supply levels. This setting can be changed by using the following hot key: Alt + F, or look under the A/I window during gameplay.
- Added to the Manuals Folder: Standard Toolbar Reference Guide
- Made the on-map elevation/coordinates/terrainmod font sizes a step smaller.
- Tweaked the in-game weapon descriptions.
- Tweaked Historical Antietam scenario to better reflect release schedule.
- Fixed a damaged bridge crossing bug.
- Fixed a word-wrap bug in cp_start.exe.
- Implemented a true, large (4X) 2D map view, the new 2D Normal View, aka Zoom2D100.(Unlike before, where the largest 2D map view was achieved via software auto-magnification.)
- Greatly expanded and redesigned the Standard game engine Toolbar, now with 70 buttons. (The Classic Toolbar is retained.)
- Implemented: Settings > Toolbar > None/Classic Small/Classic Large/Standard Small/Standard Medium/Standard Large.
- Implemented dozens of new hot keys. Just about every menu option and game feature has been assigned a hot key. (This necessitated a number of hot key reassignments.)
- Hot keys are now documented in-game, in the menus, in the Status Bar and in Toolbar button tooltips.
- Reorganized the files and folders, such that everything is not stored in one big heap in the top-level game folder, rather is stored by file type and purpose in an expanded file folder hierarchy.
- Implemented a full-featured logging system, to aid in code development, debugging, and user support, among other purposes.
- Added the Extreme Fog of War optional rule. When Extreme Fog of War is in effect, the Visibility highlight only displays from friendly occupied hexes. Also, for enemy units in obscuring terrain (e.g., Forest), enemy force counts will only display as XXX instead of, for example, 3XX.
- For artillery (and with the Manual Defensive Fire option toggled OFF), changed the Auto Defensive Fire default value from Max to Min.
- Implemented: Settings > Hex Highlights > Hex Outlines/Hex Shading.
- Implemented: Settings > Map Contours > Colors…/Widths…
- Implemented: Settings > Hand-Drawn 3D Map.
- Implemented: Settings > Unit/Leader Boxes > Color/No Color.
- Implemented: View > Map Elevation/Map Coordinates/Map Combat Modifiers.
- Implemented: View > 2D Map Slopes.
- New 3D hand-painted maps including settings toggle
- New 3D units (with customized regimental flags, etc.)
- New 2D terrain graphics
- Changed the brigade combat colors to display on counter edge (not on counter face).
- 2D counter redesign including all counter symbology
- New unit card colorization for all formations including leaders (includes refreshed B&W images)
- Standardized naming in OOB’s to be rolled out across prior and future titles
A lot has been done and you will notice more options to switch graphics on and off as well as additional graphic sets. The Old Banshee team have closely collaborated and provided their excellent work in theses patches and map updates. In Chancellorsville, the team even provided multiple maps covering the different seasons as this area was fought over for an extended period of time. Seeing the attention to detail including both summer, fall, winter and snow maps was above and beyond.
Beyond thanking Frank and the Old Banshee team, Berto our resident (overworked and part-time) programmer has taken a lot of what he has learned updating the Panzer Battles system and applied it to the Civil War Battles set. Rich Walker who authored many of the previous releases along with John Ferry have done all the tough hack work to rewrite order of battle and verify the titles scenarios and overall infrastructure. A lot of the current updates required some very deep reviews of the existing data and these two gentlemen have been tireless in getting through mountains of work.
All credit to the whole team for the time put in and the time still required to get the remaining Civil War Battle titles updated.
Here are some screen shots from the new builds (all can be clicked to view full size);
This shot, from Chancellorsville, shows the new alternative 2D unit graphics as well as the new ‘natural’ zoom level;
This capture is from one of the Chancellorsville campaign scenarios and shows more of the details in the 3D units. Note the variation in flags and unit banners;
Fall anyone? The Old Banshee team have included autumn and winter trees (no foliage) as well as snow on the ground for the Chancellorsville maps;
This image from Antietam is at the mid level 2D zoom with the equivalent new unit graphics;
Here is the Confederate defenses around Dunker Church at the beginning of the Antietam battle;
This shot from 1st Bull Run shows the zoomed out 3D units and terrain;
The new leader graphics are highlighted in this screen grab from Campaign Peninsula;
This is another zoomed out 3D shot, illustrating the defensive positions of both sides;
Here is the maximum zoom out in Peninsula showing part of the Chickahominy River;
Here is an example of the new 2D unit graphics in Petersburg;
And the battle scarred terrain around the siege defenses of Petersburg;
These updates are completely free for existing HPS & JTS Civil War Battle owners. There are more details at the John Tiller Software website.
We are working on the next tranche of updates for the game series and will release them when ready.
Like the Panzer Campaigns Gold releases, it’s great to refresh another of John Tiller’s iconic game series.

David,
What great news to come home to today! One question – if I get excited and want to add Chancellorsville to the collection, would the updates be included or would I need to unload them? Anyway many thanks to the whole team. Ken P
Yes, all updates are included with any purchases.
David
Antietam worked fine and Chancellorsville maps. Other links give me 404 errors-success denied
download link is not working on my end for Cville and Peninsular.
hand drawn maps for all three games are working.
Antietam download link is working.
All, we will check the links.
David
Also, please do go to the JTS updates page and try the links directly there.
Thanks,
David
Thank you all, no idea what went wrong, but the links are now working…
David
games are locked and loaded.
you guys did a fabulous job.
what a uplift for these games.
much appreciated
Amazing thanks, makes it look so much better
This is fantastic work, David, Well done you and your team. I have Antietam and updated it no probs. Works lovely. Much more functionality and a beautiful map upgrade. I think I’ll but Peninsula now. Will it come already as version 3 if I buy?
That was my first question. Second is – the game file is now huge on the SSD – 4.2GB. I assume that’s the new 3d images. they’re nice, but I NEVER look at 3d. Can i save space by not using them at all, or will the game not work without them?
Thanks,
Peter
Hi Peter,
Thank you. You’re correct regarding size and the 3D images. Yes you can remove them with any ill effect. There are two ways. There is a selection under settings for the painted BMP maps that will toggle them on and off. That will show or not show them, but not save any space. Alternatively, you can go into the Maps directory and delete all the BMP files (only) and that will save space.please note there is a Map and Maps directory. Please only do this in a Maps.
As far as Peninsula, yes it will include all the new maps.
David
Thanks, David. Very helpful.
Great work I just bought Antietam to enjoy One question – help pull down menu does nothing when clicked. Neither does help button trying to find out about what optional rules to use. WAD or do I need to link help files up somehow?
Hi Michael,
Did you patch over an HPS or a JTS version? I have just checked my JTS version and it is working fine. Do you have any files under the Manuals folder in the game installation?
David
This isn’t a version of the PDF problem with win 10, is it? Maybe if you updated after a win 10 update you will have to manually install a free version of adobe to get the PDF files to work from the dropdown. Maybe this is a different issue. Just a thought.
Thx for replies. I bought game from John Tiller website store about a week ago. I have nine pdf files in the manuals folder. I didn’t need update. I bought and downloadd 3.0 from JTS. Only thing else I dl’d the graphics too.
Thx again for replies and any hrlp. I really like what you guys are doing – graphics and ai adds – and am ready to splurge on some panzer and CW games as Antitem is great – help stuff not there nice but minor little used.
even if you are having difficulty viewing help files in the dropdown, you should be able to go into the main folder and open any pdf file. If you cannot open a pdf file in the main folder, something is wrong with your Adobe file.
see this site to solve your Adobe problems……….https://www.wikihow.com/Open-PDF-Files
The PDF files can be there in the folder but, in win 10, won’t open from the dropdown unless you have manually installed adobe acroibat reader (free) and set it as your default PDF reader (let me know if you need to know how to do this). This is because win 10 defaults to using its own version of adobe acrobat, integrated with the system, and many programs (JTS included) do not recognise it.
Help Drop down: F2 parameter data works clicking on drop down or f2. F1, F3-F5 nothing. Change files and about ok.
I had that. That’s why I keep saying you need to install the free adobe program and set it as the win 10 default for viewing pdf files. I had your exact problem and solved it like that.
Yep, the ones I get to aren’t pdfs. I installed adobe. Could you please tell me how to set it as default pdf reader? I found setting default apps but one for documents was not there. Thanks for your help.
From the default apps page scroll down and choose ‘set default apps by file type.’ Then scroll through the list of file types until you find ‘PDF’, select your new adobe reader alongside it.
Got it. Thanks for your time and help. And your work with the Tiller games. Gonna go buy me a panzer battle right now.
As 3 titles were updated to Petersburg level + a patch for Petersburg, can we expect more updates this year?
And will the updates first complete the Eastern Theater or can we expect updates for the Western Theater next?
We’re working on a number of Eastern Theatre updates currently.
David
I’m ignorant about this, but will any current or future updates work with the JTS titles republished by Matrix Games? Thanks!
Am waiting for the new 3d graphics for Gettysburg. When will they be released?
Andy,
We’re hard at work on Gettysburg as we speak. If it passes our Q/A process you may have a welcome Christmas present. Please don’t hold us to that, but it is far enough along that it is currently in final review.
Thanks,
David
